Happy Birthday, Electra

Two years ago this month, my book Goth-girl to Cowgirl was published, fans of my “Rescue” series were excited to read Electra’s story of healing and redemption, and it won the coveted WILLA Literary Award for Young Adult Fiction.

Electra might be my favorite character, even though she is so far my from own experiences that I’ve drawn on heavily in my past books. She’s a New Yorker, hiding her broken heart behind a dark, Goth-girl persona, and is not the least bit interested in horses. She started out as a minor, secondary character in Rescuing Samantha but she soon took on a life of her own. By the time I finished the Rescue trilogy, my readers were saying, “I want more. Write a book from Electra’s point of view.”

The growth and change in this young teen, as well as her exuberance, is what captivates us. When she meets Apache, a half-dead horse and realizes another being needs her and she needs him, she matures from the lost, sullen, self-destructive girl to one who finds something to care about, to live for.

As she would say in her inimitable way, “Ohmygosh, is it really my birthday? Apache, look–you have your cake {pellets} and I have one too!”

In honor of this celebration the e-book Goth-girl to Cowgirl is on a three-day Kindle Countdown, starting Friday the 28th at 99 cents. If you haven’t read it, here’s your chance! Amazon: https://tiny.cc/#
